A New Heart

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. –Ezekiel 36:26 NIV

When someone is on a heart transplant list, it’s a double-edged sword. The patient needs the heart to live, but he also knows that someone else has to die before he can receive it. In Ezekiel 36:26, we read about God’s promise to give us a new heart, not one of flesh and blood—but a spiritual heart. The new heart doesn’t pump blood; it pumps what we need to live eternally. The new heart gives us a fresh perspective. It changes our mind frame from sinful to Holy, from carnal to spiritual.

The Word of God is written on this new heart, imprinted like a seal that is set in soft wax. The new heart is sanctified; it’s declared holy. The new heart is freed from sin, purified, and made legitimate in God’s sight. Our sanctified heart will turn from sin to God because it loves His Word. Our new heart will be quick to repent when it misses the mark and sins. And just as the patient waiting for the heart transplant, someone had to die to provide this new heart. Jesus is our donor. He gave his life for you and me that we might live. Praise our Lord, Jesus!
