If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciple. –John 8:31 ESV
A disciple is a student, someone who diligently and purposefully studies the teachings of someone. To abide means to remain, or continuously walk closely. Jesus made a promise to all those who abide in Him and become one of His disciples. “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (John 15:7 ESV). It is an amazing reward, but it’s only promised to those who abide in Him.When you’re in a relationship with someone, you study them and get to know their dreams, desires, likes, dislikes, passions, and pains. That’s the kind of relationship Jesus wants to have with each of His disciples. He wants you to walk closely enough with Him in order that you will know all about Him, believe in Him, and do what He has done—“and even greater things” (John 14:12 NIV).What do you desire? A successful marriage? Your dream job? Your health restored? Your kids living for Jesus? Restoration for your family? If you abide in Jesus, you may ask for anything. How do you abide in the Lord? Spend daily quiet time with God, reading His Word, telling Him your desires, and confessing your sins. Allow Him to work in your life moment by moment and day by day.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you abide in Jesus.
Thank God for a spirit of discernment as you begin studying and understanding His Word.
