Disciples

By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. –John 13:35 NKJV

When you hear the word “disciple,” you usually think of the twelve men Jesus picked to follow Him. Yet in the New Testament, 269 times Jesus calls His believers—you and me—to be disciples. What does it mean to be a disciple? A disciple is a “follower,” someone who adheres completely to the teachings of another. Obedience and commitment to the ways of the Lord make disciples. What does it look like to live as a disciple? Believe in Jesus and seek to follow Him in your daily life. Learn from Him by studying His Word, the Bible. Be close to the Lord and humble yourself. Fill your heart with gratitude and love—love for God and others. When you are a disciple of Jesus, you naturally point people to Him. As Matthew 28:19-20 (NKJV) says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
