Growing Up in Christ

…Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you. –Matthew 5:48 MSG

Do you remember the old Toys “R” Us jingle, “I don’t wanna grow up. I’m a Toys R Us kid…” As pleasant as this jingle was, there comes a time when you must grow up and move forward in life. This holds true in your spiritual life, as well. Upon receiving Christ, you become God’s child. However, your new life in Christ does not stop at the point of salvation. As a member of God’s family, He desires that you mature in godly attributes and behaviors. As you grow up in Christ, you will increase in wisdom, making fewer mistakes. Living according to God’s ways—not your ways, you will have access to more of His power to overcome troubles. Your life will be filled with more joyful celebrations rather than with a series of pity parties. As a mature Christian, you will freely share the gifts and talents God’s Spirit has placed within you, instead of keeping them to yourself. In addition, you will come to recognize, appreciate, and accept God’s transformation taking place within you. And, although you grow up in Christ, you can be warmed with the truth that you will always be God’s cherished and dearly loved child.
