In This World But Not of It

So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” –2 Corinthians 5:20 NLT

You may have heard it said that Christ-followers should be in the world but not of it. What does this mean? When Jesus walked on earth, He exhibited what it looked like to be in the world but not of it. Jesus did His Father’s will and never wavered, yet He still hung out with sinners, showing them the love of His Father. We too are called to be set apart from this world. Our thinking should be completely different from what the world offers. So while our world is filled with hate, pride, and sin—all contrary to what God intended, Christians should be filled with love and joy. First Peter 2:11 (NLT) tells us, “Dear friends, I warn you as ‘temporary residents and foreigners’ to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.” As believers, we can’t allow ourselves to follow current thinking. We should want to be different and be examples for others. We might be the only light of Christ a person may ever encounter. This means that we should be committed to live a life that always honors Jesus. Don’t allow yourself to be influenced by worldly views. Align your thoughts with the Word of God and be willing to take a stand—unafraid to stand firm for what is right in God’s eyes. Be in the world but not of it.
