And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.” –Genesis 32:28 NKJV
What does it mean to be tenacious? The word tenacity is defined as the tendency to adhere, to cling, or to be persistent in achieving something that is desired. In Genesis 32 (NIV), we read about a man, named Jacob, who was tenacious. In obedience to the Lord, Jacob was in route to meet with his brother Esau whom he had swindled out of his birthright several years before.Jacob was afraid; but he wanted to make peace with his brother, even if it cost him his own life. Yet, Jacob believed God would take care of him. In this passage, we learn that Jacob wrestled with an angel of the Lord. He would not let go. He proved his tenacity to the Lord, and the Lord blessed him. In each of our own walks with God, how persistent are we willing to be?How far are we willing to go in our obedience to the Lord? How tenacious are we in our desire to please Him? Let us grab on to our amazing Savior, never letting go, even throughout the most precarious of times. We need to persist, declaring, “I will not let go, no matter what.” Then, in His presence, we are assured, as Jacob, of the Lord’s blessings.
My heavenly Father, help me to be tenacious in my walk with You.
Holy Spirit, strengthen me in my most precarious and difficult times to cling on to You and never let go.
