Kindness Is Possible

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. –Colossians 3:12 ESV

We can walk on the moon, talk around the world on our phones, travel to any continent, and build skyscrapers and bridges galore, but we just can’t seem to get the hang of being kind. We blow up at the drop of a hat, normally patient people grow fangs when they get behind the wheel of a car, and we’re ready to run over anyone who gets in our way. Why? Because kindness isn’t something you do, it’s something you are.Kindness is one of the nine fruits of the Spirit: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV). An apple tree doesn’t strain to produce apples; it simply reproduces the seeds that are planted. Kindness is simply the fruit of the Holy Spirit’s nature that is planted in us at our rebirth in Christ. If you want bigger apples, you fertilize the tree. If you want more kindness, you feed your spirit with the Word of God—let the Holy Spirit have control of your life. If the tree is healthy, so is the fruit. If the spirit is well fed, it can’t help but reproduce God’s bountiful harvest of kindness.

prayer focuses

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you be kind.

When you find yourself being unkind, stop, turn around, and go the other direction. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you refuse to let your selfishness win.
