Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. –Proverbs 4:25 NIV
Believers who strive to live lives that are pure in heart, mind, and behavior often find it difficult to fight against the immoral, evil, and sin-saturated world around them. Movies, social media, TV, Netflix, billboards, and more regularly lure us to dwell on things that are at odds with a life of faith. In order to resist the temptations swirling around us, it’s often imperative for us to do exactly what Proverbs 4:25 advises—keep our eyes fixed on God. Adhering to this simple guidance, each believer begins the process of taking “captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV). We consciously choose to avoid focusing our eyes, ears, and attention on the ungodly things, such as inappropriately dressed people, sinful content and videos, or suggestive advertisements.Focusing our eyes on the Lord has powerful spiritual applications as well. When temptations, allurements, or criticism from others come at us from every side, threatening to trip us up, we can maintain a steady and consistent walk by purposefully setting our “hearts on things above” (Colossians 3:1 NIV), keeping our eyes fixed on Christ.
