Maundy Thursday

Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. –Hebrews 12:2 NIV

Maundy Thursday is not a common term. It is a Latin word that means “command” referring to Jesus’ commandment to the disciples to “Love one another as I have loved you.” This takes place at the Last Supper, which is also the Passover Seder. Maundy Thursday is part of the final week of Jesus’ life.On this Thursday, Jesus shared the Passover meal with the disciples. At this meal, although He had been their teacher and their Lord, He washes their feet. A true example of humility and love. Jesus then goes to Gethsemane, a garden at the Mount of Olives. This is where Jesus agonizes knowing what He is about to face. It is referred to as the “agony in the garden” where Judas Iscariot commits an act of betrayal. All of this was part of the Lord’s sacrifice and death on Good Friday, His burial on Saturday, and His Resurrection on Easter Sunday. The basis of our eternal hope for eternity! As John 3:16 (NIV) tells us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Let’s not forget!
