Numbers 28:1-18; Numbers 29:39-40
Numbers 28 and 29 describe the order of offerings and festivals for the budding nation of Israel. There were things the people of God were to offer daily (morning/evening), weekly (Sabbath), monthly, and yearly - burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings, feasts - it's all so beautiful! Numbers 28:1-2 says, "The Lord said to Moses, ‘Give this command to the Israelites and say to them: ‘See that you present to me at the appointed time the food for my offerings made by fire, as an aroma pleasing to me.’’ (NIV)God wanted the lives of His people to be marked by devotion, sacrifice, and celebrations. When these routines were neglected, they strayed. These became the habits, rhythms, and patterns for them to encounter and experience God. They were important enough for God to establish them for His people then so it stands to reason that they are important for us as well. In our Protestant, Westernized Christianity, the rhythms we follow are marked by the Church calendar and while different, they are still important and meaningful. We observe Passover through the Lord’s Supper, some of us observe Lent and Advent. We celebrate Christ’s birth (Christmas) and His resurrection (Easter). Even our 21 days of prayer and fasting is a beautiful rhythm we have created to invite us to encounter God in new, fresh ways. When we encounter God and His Son through the Holy Spirit regularly, we are staying connected to the Source for living a life of freedom. As we consider the biblical importance of habits, rhythms, and celebrations of a God-centered life – what are yours? Are there habits or patterns that are unhealthy and prevent you from encountering God?
In what ways is the Holy Spirit speaking to You from God’s Word? How can you apply this to your life? Take some time to journal your thoughts.
Prayer Holy Spirit, prompt me toward habits and patterns that will allow me to encounter God in my life. I confess there are some that get in the way of that, they are . . .
