John 1:1-4; Jeremiah 15:16; Isaiah 50:4; Psalm 119:105, 165
When we meet someone for the first time, in an effort to get to know them, we listen to their story. In our effort to know God, we must first listen to His story. His story is told to us through His Word. Through the Word of God, we come to know the heart of the Father, His plans and purposes for the world, and for us individually through His rescue, redemption, and restoration of all things. The Jewish people were a people of the Text; they knew the Hebrew Scriptures well. In fact, they memorized it. And not just memorized it, they internalized it. Jeremiah 15:16 says this, “When Your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear Your name, Lord God Almighty.” (NIV) Jeremiah was given a very hard assignment! In fact, in this very chapter, he rues the day he was born! So, it is worth noting that his love for the Word of God was a delight and joy for him and that he stood firm on the truth that he was an Image bearer (like each one of us!). Do you see that he “ate” the Word of God?! God’s Word was meant to be ingested and digested as spiritual nutrition for us.This love for the text is both humbling and convicting. In our reading today, we see the Word is eternal, it is a delight and joy, it sustains the weary, is a lamp at our feet, a light to our path keeps us from stumbling and gives great peace. Scripture is the essential guide that each of us needs; through the Word, God offers us an ever-unfolding invitation to know God.What is your current level of desire for the Word of God? What would need to happen to increase that desire? Let’s ask the Spirit to make us hungry and thirsty for His Word that we might know the heart of the Father and be spiritually nourished and strengthened by it!
In what ways is the Holy Spirit speaking to You from God’s Word? How can you apply this to your life? Take some time to journal your thoughts.
Prayer Father, may we be students of the Word so that we can encourage, support, and help the tired, discouraged, and overwhelmed with just a word. Give us a longing to know You more through the pages of Your Word.
