Safety Features

Set a guard over my mouth Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. –Psalm 141:3 NIV

Today’s cars are equipped with many safety features including parking assist, as well as other aids to warn of drifting, blind spots, and forward collision. And, so many people have tragically forgotten their children in cars, that some autos are now equipped with an alarm that goes off if the driver walks a certain distance away while the child is in the car seat. Furthermore, not too long ago, rumble strips were installed on the side of many highways, jarring drivers back to reality on long road trips.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a safety feature on our mouths? If our brains could somehow get the signal before we uttered something hurtful, wouldn’t that be awesome? Life would certainly be less painful for us and for those around us if we would heed the warning.

Thankfully, there actually is a warning system available to us. It’s found in Psalm 141:3 (NIV): “Set a guard over my mouth Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.” We are all imperfect people who are being perfected daily by God’s grace. When we fill our hearts with His Word, God’s Spirit is activated, warning us to speak in love.

prayer focuses

Lord, teach me to guard my heart and to season my words with grace. Teach me to listen more and talk less.

Lord, help me to be so full of Your Word that my speech reflects it.
