Take Care of My Sheep

Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” –John 21:16 NIV

In John 21, the disciples are discouraged, especially Peter. So he decides to go back to what he knows best—fishing. On this particular day, Peter and some of the disciples were not catching anything until suddenly Jesus calls to them from the shore asking if they’d caught any fish. When they answer no, he tells them to throw their nets on the right side of the boat.To their amazement, their nets begin to overflow with fish. After they’d finished eating some of the fish they caught, Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved Him. Peter answered “yes” each time. John 21:17 (NIV) says, “Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’” This series of questions must have reminded Peter that He had denied the Lord three times after Jesus was arrested. In the moments after the third inquiry, Peter must have realized the connection Jesus was making by confronting Peter’s sins and seeking to restore their relationship. Jesus then told Peter to take care of His sheep. This is a calling for each of us. As believers, having repented of our sins and accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we too are commissioned to care for and encourage one another. In doing so, we feed the Lord’s sheep.
