That Good Part

“But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” –Luke 10:42 NKJV

Luke 10:38-42 (NKJV) tells the story of two sisters, Martha and Mary. Martha invited Jesus into her home and got busy with the duties of “serving.” When Mary chose to sit with Jesus, instead of helping, Martha complained. We learn a lot from Jesus’ response to Martha.Martha was not just serving. Martha was “distracted with much” serving. Jesus explained that Martha was “worried and troubled about many things.” Martha’s choice to be over-occupied with her duties distracted her from the one thing that was needed—to sit in the presence of her Lord.Jesus explained that Mary’s choice to sit with Him was the right decision. He called it “that good part,” meaning it was the needed, most essential, and advantageous decision she could have made. And He protected Mary’s decision, not allowing it to be taken from her. Each day, from the moment you awake, you can either choose to allow the duties of the day ahead to over-occupy your mind, or you can choose to spend time with Jesus in His Word and His presence. Today, Jesus invites you to choose that “good part.” Sit at His feet, soak in His presence, and learn from His Word.
