Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. –Galatians 6:8 NIV
Oftentimes, things outside of God’s design look colorful and attractive, even beneficial. But, Galatians 6:8 reminds us that such earthly pleasures won’t last. So, how do we keep sinful desires from overrunning our lives?Identify the root. We can cut out specific behaviors from our lives through our own willpower, and our lives may appear righteous for a while. But, if we fail to get on our knees in prayer, in order to deal with the deeper motivations from which these actions stem, the vines will germinate again and continue to coil around different areas of our lives.Be diligent. Hebrews 12:1 (NASB) helps us to understand the deceitfulness and encroaching nature of sin, exhorting us to “…rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us.”Restart. This may mean completely detaching from a harmful relationship, withdrawing from an ungodly work environment, or radically eliminating a destructive habit or attitude. Such pruning may be painful, but we can trust that when we give ourselves to the care of the Master Gardener, Jesus, He will plant a new crop of righteousness in and around us that will produce a bountiful harvest “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20 NIV).
Pray that the Lord will help you identify the roots in your life that are holding you back from full freedom in Him.
Thank God for always loving you, believing in you, and making you a new creation in Him.
