He touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” –Isaiah 6:7-8 NIV

Unclean Lips

He touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” –Isaiah 6:7-8 NIV

Isaiah 6 showed us the re-commissioning of God’s call on Isaiah’s life. This renewal was brought on by the death of King Uzziah. Isaiah cried out to God that he was a man of unclean lips as he lived among a people of unclean lips. If nothing else, he felt he was guilty by association. In a vision, Isaiah saw the Lord. He was overwhelmed by his own sense of unworthiness in the presence of a holy God. This experience took place in the innermost Holy of Holies where the Ark of the Covenant was housed. Isaiah was humbled to be standing in the very presence of God, yet he knew that he had nothing to fear. God wasn’t out to kill him, but rather to forgive him. Then an angel touched his lips with a coal of fire, signifying that he was not only forgiven, but purified. The coal represented pain’s ability to purify and cleanse. On the cross, Christ suffered tremendous pain; and like that coal of fire, His pain purified and cleansed believers from all sin. Isaiah answered the question asked by God when he proclaimed, “Send me!” We too have been purified from unclean lips. So, let us each proclaim loudly, “Send Me!”

prayer focuses

Lord Jesus, help me to stop wasting time wallowing in my own unworthiness, and instead rejoice that You have redeemed me.

Watch over my mouth and guard my lips, dear Lord. Holy Spirit, purify my speech.
