Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. –Ephesians 4:29 NIV
Has anyone ever said something to you that resonated with you for the rest of your life? Were the words kind? Or hurtful? In today’s world, it is so easy to speak your mind on any given topic. While this can be a great tool for building the Kingdom of God, it can also be a way to harm it. As a Christian, try to think before speaking. Ask yourself, “Will what I’m going to say hurt or help the person to whom I’m speaking?” And, “Will what I’m going to say help or hurt the person about whom I’m speaking?” Yes, you can help your brothers and sisters in Christ to make the right decisions and point them to God’s Word, but it should always be in love and provide encouragement, building them up—not tearing them down. Choose your words carefully, remembering that, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21 NIV). Use language to further your love for and encourage one another.
Pray that the Holy Spirit will help you navigate through difficult conversations and speak truth and light.
Pray that God will use your words to help encourage everyone you come in contact who needs it.
