Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. –James 3:2 NLT
We all fail at times to control our tongues. Unfortunately, this can be a common occurrence, and usually we realize that we missed the mark much too late. Too often, we speak before we think. We need to remember that our words do matter, and those words can either build others up or tear others down. Yes, words can actually destroy a person. What is said can never be taken back. Negative and harmful words can be so hurtful. In fact, it could take a person years of insecurities to get past negative words said to them or about them. This pain can lead to a really long road to recovery. So how can we tame our tongues? We have to think before we speak. “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry” (James 1:19 NLT). We must take every word captive with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Each day we should pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help us show love with our words and be a reflection of God through the words we say. This is how we control our tongues and reflect His Word.
Holy Spirit, please help me to think before I speak.
Help me to listen to Your voice instead of the inner voice of negativity. Ask God to help you speak words that bring healing—not hurt—just as Proverbs 12:18 (NLT) says, “Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.”
