Where’s Your Focus?

The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. –Matthew 6:22 ESV

The human eye is amazing. When light hits the retina, special cells called photoreceptors turn that light into electrical signals. Those signals then travel from the retina through the optic nerve to the brain. The brain then turns those signals into the images we see. God makes the best camera money can’t buy! But did you ever stop and think about how the eye can focus on everything we see, yet has never seen itself? The eye looks out; it never looks in. It knows what the most beautiful sunset looks like but has no idea the color of its own iris. Our feelings are just like our eyes. What causes our feelings of rejection and insecurity? When someone offends us, do we look out to see their pain, or do we immediately look inward and feel sorry for ourselves? Do we reflect the light of God and create images of forgiveness? What signals are we carrying to the brain? The eye is a perfect example of God’s grace. It looks out, not in. It sees beauty and creates images of grace for all to see. The eye is the lamp of the body, and it can also be the light of our soul.

prayer focuses

Ask God to help you look out, not in! Father, I know that my mind is a battleground—what I put into it determines my thoughts.

Help me focus on seeing others’ pain, not my own hurt feelings.
