Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. –1 Corinthians 13:6-7 NIV

In Genesis 43-46, we read the story of Joseph who was one of Jacob’s twelve sons. Over the years, he was shown preferential treatment by his father, causing his brothers to become jealous and resentful. When Jacob gave Joseph a special coat, the brothers began planning to get rid of this favored son. They sold him into slavery where he was taken to Egypt. In Egypt, he eventually became the steward to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials. Potiphar’s wife made false accusations against Joseph, and he was arrested. While he was imprisoned, God gave him the ability to interpret dreams. He was able to interpret Pharaoh’s dream, predicting a great famine. The Egyptian ruler was pleased, released Joseph from prison, and appointed him governor of Egypt. Joseph wisely rationed food in preparation for the famine. During this crisis, his brothers came to Egypt in order to buy food. They were in fear and disbelief upon seeing their brother, expecting him to be dead or enslaved. At this point, Joseph could easily have gotten revenge, but he didn’t. Instead he invited his brothers and Father to come live in Egypt. True love doesn’t get revenge, it blesses. Joseph is a great example of Christ’s love toward us. Even in our sin, He gave His life for us. He has invited us to live with Him eternally.
